10 places you must experience in Frederiksberg

Our ultra-local host at Møstings, Olivia, guides you to some of her favorite spots in Frederiksberg. So, set aside a day or two on the weekend, read the guide, and experience the city like a local!

Frederiksberg is a green oasis in the middle of Copenhagen, and it’s a district that both tourists and locals love! Here you’ll find charming streets, beautiful parks, and lots of cool cafes. Our super-local guide, Olivia from Møstings, has put together her own top 10 list of what to experience when visiting Frederiksberg.

1. Betty Nansen Theatre

At the iconic Betty Nansen theater you can experience theatrical art in a special class. The theater is named after Betty Nansen, when in the period 1917-1943 as the theater’s director, she managed to give the theater a significant quality boost, and because she herself was a prominent figure on the Danish theater scene during her lifetime. Today, the theater delivers a multitude of different performances that span a wide range of genres and moods. Buy a ticket for a wonderful round of escapism, and afterwards enjoy a good glass of wine or an aperitif on Frederiksberg Allé. Perhaps at the restaurant Promenaden just across the street?  (Most performances are in danish)

Tip: Are you a student? Then you can buy latesale tickets one hour before the performance starts for only DKK 95 each. The tickets can only be bought in the foyer, where there is a first-come, first-served basis.

2. Frederiksberg Chocolate

If you continue down Frederiksberg Allé, you will pass Frederiksberg Chocolate. Here you can buy all kinds of delights in the form of chocolate, cream buns and high-quality confectionery, which can only excite children and adults alike. The store is divided into two parts, so in the summer months you can also buy their homemade ice cream in the store next door, and their famous ‘guf’ (marshmallow whip) in different varieties, should you feel tempted to do so. If you don’t like either, they make coffee and hot chocolate to go – with the house’s own chocolate, of course!

3. Le Gourmand

Are you a Francophile? Then Le Gourmand is a must visit! Le Gourmand is located in the middle of the iconic Værnedamsvej, which in 2022 was awarded fifth place on the list of the 33 coolest neighborhoods in the world by the magazine Time Out. The restaurant is owned and run by Carsten Thisted, who has been commuting between France and Denmark since 2005 to pick up the best delicacies and bring them to Denmark.

Enjoy the classic French bistro dishes on site, such as Jambon/Beurre (ham/butter) sandwiches made with bread from Hart Bakery for lunch, or shop for a culinary evening at home. Bon appetit!

4. Granola

At the American-European inspired restaurant Granola you can have everything your heart desires from rich, cheeky and tasty bistro food! The restaurant offers Danish classics such as smørebrød with chicken salad to French dishes such as steak tartare and chevré chaud salad. The restaurant is loved and well visited by local Frederiksberg citizens, which is why it always exudes a good atmosphere and life.

So do as the locals do, and either take a seat outside with a view to the always busy Værnedamsvej, or take a seat in the restaurant’s fine setting, which will immediately lead your thoughts to a bistro in Paris. Either way, we promise you won’t regret your visit to Værnedamsvej’s second French gem.

Tip: Granola serves fresh oysters every day from 5-7pm for just DKK 10 each. Enjoy them with a glass of bubbly in the spring sun.

5. Thiemers Magasin

At the corner of Tullinsgade on Værnedamsvej, you will come across the city’s nicest bookstore, Thiemers Magasin. At Thiemers Magasin you can find a multitude of wonderful books, carefully selected by the store’s skilled employees, get a hot coffee or a good glass of wine, which can be enjoyed outside in front of the store on the iconic red benches. The bookshop is probably visited by authors, so you may be lucky to see a familiar face. Otherwise, you can register for various events via their website, where you have the opportunity to meet the various authors at book launches, come to readings or guided group readings. Thiemers Magasin was awarded the prize as the City’s Best Literary Experience in 2022, so we can safely recommend that you make your way past this oasis in the middle of the vibrant city life.

7. Botti

Botti is the city’s new wine shop, which primarily sells Northern Italian wines that are organically grown with care and respect for the environment. If you are into quality wine from the northern part of Italy, then Botti is a place you must visit. Botti’s concept is that you cannot reserve a table, as the focus is on presence, tranquility and the good experience. The idea is that you should have time to experience the store, have a good chat with the sommelier about the wine you get in the glass and relax to enjoy it. To complete the experience at Botti, you can have light starters and snacks served with your wine in the style of the wine the farmers themselves eat after a day in the fields.

8. The Parks and Cisternerne

Frederiksberg Have is the city’s green heart. It is a place that exudes both peace and life, as the garden is always well visited by locals as well as tourists. The garden was converted by Frederik d. 6 in the period 1798-1804 from a baroque garden to a romantic garden, which was the dominant garden style in the period. That is why the paths and canals in the garden are winding, and lead the visitors on a carefully planned adventure through the garden, which is densely overgrown with trees, bushes and flowers. In the garden you can experience the “spring cave” close to the castle, small waterfalls in the landscaped lakes, the Chinese gazebo and much more.

Regardless of whether you want to go for a walk, settle down on the grass for a picnic or enjoy the peace on a bench, the garden is an obvious place to go. If you feel like walking a bit further, you can conveniently cross Roskildevej and visit Søndermarken.

In Søndermarken, you can also visit our art gallery Cisternerne, the city’s old water reservoir that has been converted into an underground art gallery with changing exhibitions. Experience the fantastic and unique space that is guaranteed to be unlike any other art gallery you have visited before.

Most evenings you will find a pianist at the venue’s grand piano, who provides just the right atmosphere, and if you come on Sundays, the house orchestra plays jazz. Café Intime is known for being a place that accommodates and brings together all people across differences, which is why you can also stop by for dragshows, where the house’s respective drags kick off the party with wild performances. Come by for a cold beer or drink with the city’s other guests, and be embraced by the unique atmosphere that only Café Intime can give you.
