FILIP VEST: RESORT

Møstings is transformed into a fictional seaside resort when the artist Filip Vest (b. 1995) takes over the inside and outdoor space of Møstings with his solo exhibition Resort. Here the audience is presented with a surreal holiday paradise, where climate crisis, human isolation, escapism and doom lurk right under the luxurious surface.  

Through a scenographic installation and multiple performances during the exhibition period, Filip Vest unfolds a sensory story about our current time, where action paralysis is often prevailing in the way we face crises and catastrophes.  

For the exhibition, Møstings’ four exhibition rooms have been transformed into a coherent universe, structured as a hotel room, a spa, a bar, and a lobby. We witness a couple at a holiday-resort that they’re not able to leave and where a natural disaster seems imminent. Small stones start to emerge in the buffet, indentations in the mattrasses are reminiscent of volcano craters, and a weird smell of smoke gets mixed with the spa aroma therapy. Meanwhile, the couple attempts to reinvent themselves and each other in a game with new identities.  

Resort is a fictional universe where everything appears porous; nature and culture, identities and relations, and past, present, and future coalesce, while small and bigger movements affect each other, both plate-tectonically and relationship-dynamically.

Resort appears as a scenographic installation when there is no performance, and visitors are instead invited into fragments of the storyline via saved phone recordings, a voicemail that is suddenly heard throughout the room, and crumpled up love letters, diaries, receipts, etc.   

The exhibition is inspired by Møstings’ origin as a summer residence for the wealthy citizens in the late 19th century.  

With Resort, Filip Vest explores the time of crisis that we are currently in, our action paralysis when facing small and big catastrophes, global warming, and narrow perspectives, empathy, and escapism in a late capitalist society.  

Resort is an exhibition about wishing yourself far away, dreaming of being anywhere but here. About anxiety, escapism, and new identities, and about missing something before you have even lost it.

Tuesday, 6th of June, 8pm: 3^rd showing (ART WEEK)
