"Storm P.'s Wonderful World" is under renovation from August 5th to October 3rd, 2024.
The exhibition invites the audience to experience how Storm P. views Denmark and the world through his humorous lens. Here, you will find both entertainment and reflections on life and societal issues that remain relevant today.
”I am not funny, it’s what I see that is”
Robert Storm Petersen, better known as Storm P. (1882-1949), observes the Danes and the world with a sharp eye, which he translates into humor and satire. His ability to capture the spirit of the time and highlight society’s small and large paradoxes makes him an essential figure in Danish culture, and his popularity has transcended generations.
Storm P.s extensive body of work, consisting of more than 30,000 drawings held in the museum’s collection, offers insight into a significant historical period seen through a humorous perspective. The exhibition Storm P.s World presents a multitude of these works, from drawings and paintings to films, books and monologues. Together, they highlight his versatility and his ability to cross genres and media.
Humor, Quirky Inventions and Critical Reflection
Storm P.s World includes a variety of elements that allow visitors to experience his universe in a fun and engaging way.
Humor clearly shines through in Storm P.s imaginative drawings and inventions, which illuminate the absurdities of everyday life and human nature. In the invention room, children and adults alike can be inspired by his quirky creations and come up with their own crazy ideas. The exhibition also invites visitors into Storm P.s workspace, where personal objects provide insight into his creative processes, revealing the sources of inspiration and working methods behind his art.
The exhibition examines Storm P.s significance as both a humorist and a serious visual artist, with a particular focus on his paintings and watercolors.
In addition to celebrating his humor and art, the exhibition also addresses the more complex themes in his works. It explores the blind spots in his work, including the stereotypical depictions of gender and ethnicity that were common in his time, and how these reflect societal issues that remain relevant today. This part of the exhibition encourages critical dialogue about both Storm P.s perspectives and our contemporary society.
With Storm P.s World, STORM continues its mission to be a forum for discussions on the role of humor in our culture and history.
