Over the summer, Rune Bering presents the solo exhibition “Net Works” at Møstings.
As suggested by its multifaceted title, the overarching theme of the exhibition is the networks and structures that surround us socially and digitally. The title also refers to the sculptural objects in the exhibition, which are made of nets in various formats, to social and cultural networks, and to the almost invasive impact of digital systems on virtually all aspects of our lives.
At the exhibition, visitors will encounter several sculptures, all with a compelling presence due to their unique materiality and meticulous craftsmanship, reflecting a slow creation process.
Rune Bering uses found and discarded industrial materials such as copper wires from cables and electrical cords. Focusing on details, he processes these materials using traditional weaving and basketry techniques, resulting in works reminiscent of fish traps or fishing nets. This creates an interesting connection between the cultural-historical craft tradition and copper as an industrial – and simultaneously traditional art-historical – material, challenging traditional hierarchies regarding the value and use of materials.
The fish traps / fishing nets also stand as a strong metaphor for the digital threads and systems that lead and trap us like fish in schools within embedded systems and structures we do not understand.
In addition to the sculptures, the exhibition also includes a series of hanging works, which similarly revolve around the underlying strategies and methods of capture. The exhibition is tightly organized, with the design and presentation of individual works beautifully integrating into Møstings’ distinctive and classical setting, where Bering gives form to the complex world around us, which we cannot see until it manifests spatially.
