Today, Cisternerne is an underground art space and a hidden pocket beneath the city where you can retreat from everyday life, where time stands still, and where the mobile signal does not reach.

When the cold and damp climate of Cisternerne envelops you, you do not merely observe the art – you are completely surrounded by it.

The old water reservoir is dimly lit, and the atmosphere evokes fascination and enchantment in both children and adults. Each year, we invite an internationally renowned artist or architect to create an exhibition specifically for the underground spaces of Cisternerne – an exhibition that awakens all the senses and interacts with the unique architecture, climate, ambiance and history of Cisternerne.

TARYN SIMON: Start Again The Lament

Cisternerne presents an extensive sound installation by artist Taryn Simon. Building everlasting recitations of loss, Start Again the Lament explores how we mourn individually and collectively, considering the anatomy of grief and who we choose to guide us through it.
