Marcela Lucatelli: "The Inhuman Human Voice" /

For the performance The Inhuman Human Voice, Marcela Lucatelli places her voice in a living dialogue with a neural network of interactive machine voices, reprogramming seven operatic archetypes – from the witch and the queen to the prophet and the oracle – into digital voices that sing, respond, and contribute to the composition.

Using new synthesis models trained exclusively on Lucatelli’s own voice, a machine-mediated choir emerges, reacting spontaneously and improvisationally to her raw and genre-defying musical input. The result is an intense vocal ceremony in which technological errors, noise, and glitches are not concealed, but instead become an active part of the music.

The performance takes place in Cisternerne, where the cool, humid spaces and long reverberation create an acoustic experience far removed from the traditional concert hall. Here, the audience is enveloped by sound, space, and Lucatelli’s uncompromising desire to explore the possibilities of the voice. Where, then, is the boundary between human and machine – and can technology unlock our limitations and set the voice free?

The performance is created by Marcela Lucatelli and produced by Copenhagen Opera Festival and Cisternerne.

Marcela Lucatelli is a vocal artist, composer, and performer born in Brazil and based in Denmark. In her works, the voice becomes both instrument, material, and theatrical force. She works at the intersection of opera, performance art, and experimental music, and has performed at festivals and venues across Europe, South America, and the United States. Her performances move freely between classical vocal technique, improvisation, electronic manipulation, and radical theatrical gestures.

Please note that it will not be possible to experience Cisternerne’s current installation Seven Deaths by Marina Abramović during this special event, as the exhibition will be turned off.

The performance is experienced standing, and it is cool and humid in Cisternerne. Therefore, please remember to bring warm clothing. Hot and cold beverages will be available for purchase.
